A telecommunications firm needed to rapidly design
and implement the process it would use to provide a new product
to individual business customers. This product would be produced
by many people in different locations, groups, and companies, using
different computer systems. A large cross-functional team, representing
all the groups involved, was completing the process design. My work
was to finalize the design, obtain agreement and document all aspects
of the process for providing the product rapidly and accurately
when a customer ordered it. Key project challenges, all of which
were met, included completing the project rapidly, minimizing the
complexity of a naturally complicated business process, and ensuring
that all groups and individuals involved agreed with the final process
so it could be rapidly and smoothly implemented. The product was
successfully launched on time, and was quickly profitable.
